Happy New Year!!!

I'm excited to share the book cover  for Glitch, Book 1 of the Brighton Zombies Series, a post-zombie apocalypse.

Tentative release date: January 31, 2014
Add Glitch to Goodreads

When a mysterious guy from the zombie zone sneaks an illegal slip of paper to a beautiful young girl from Brighton, she must decide if she should turn him in or follow what the note says in the first book of the Brighton Zombies Series, Glitch.

Eighteen-year-old Aria has no trouble following Brighton’s rules. For one, she’s OCD about checking her Date of Death clock latched to her wrist, making sure her decisions never shorten her timeline, and two, she enjoys the peace Brighton has to offer. In no way would she bring on another attack that destroyed earth’s inhabitants like her predecessors did from their selfishness and greed. But when her best friend returns from her Advice Meeting shell shocked and won’t tell Aria what’s happened, she’s worried what awful advice awaits her. The stranger with blue-eyes knows something, but does Aria dare enter the zombie zone to get answers? Or is she doomed to live the life set for her?

Love is Respect

It's Domestic Violence Awareness Month and today I am helping Author Kristie Cook "Share the <3" by spreading awareness. You should know:

loveisrespect can help teens in abusive relationships.
Unfortunately, abusive relationships don't only plague adults. Teens, who often already have self-esteem issues, can just easily become involved and entrapped by such a relationship. The National Domestic Violence Hotline and Break the Cycle have partnered together to create loveisrespect, a resource for teens and those who love them. Check it out and learn how you can help a teen you care about know what a healthy relationship is.

I like many others was a victim of an abusive relationship as a teen but didn't know it. My boyfriend often coerced me into doing things sexually I didn't want to do and afterward felt guilty about. I'd tell him and beg him to respect my boundaries, but he never kept his promises in the moment. And when that wasn't going on, we were fighting. He told me I could never teach him anything new, never amount to anything other than having a nice body and anything I did learn was twisted up in my head and came out wrong. I knew I should break up, but didn't have the strength to do it. Only after he "pushed" me (what I thought was real abuse) did I make a change.

If you want to know more, visit www.TheHotline.org. And while you're there, Kristie and I hope you'll help by making a donation. Even just $5 can ensure one more call gets answered at The Hotline - an answer that could save a life.

Then, email your receipt to publisher (at) angdora (dot) com for entries into Kristie's giveaway and you could win some cool prizes. Get more entries in the Rafflecopter below. For more details, head on over to Kristie's Share the <3 Giveaway.

Join me to help support Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Author Kristie Cook is asking us to "Share the <3"! 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men just in the United States have been victims of severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime (Center for Disease Control statistics). You likely know someone who lives through this nightmare every day - a relative, a friend, a coworker or a neighbor down the street. Too many don't live. And too many children witness the violence to/between their parents - or are direct victims themselves.

Thankfully, help is available. Unfortunately, not enough people know whom they can call for help - safely and privately. The National Domestic Violence Hotline provides this kind of secure resource, helping survivors of abuse do what they need to do to reach safety and restart their lives. I, along with Kristie, many other authors, bloggers and readers, ask you to join us in supporting The Hotline so it may continue to provide the refuge people need. Help us "Share the <3" because "all <3's deserve to feel safe."

If you can donate even $5 to The Hotline, you could be supporting one phone call that can save a life. And for each dollar you donate, you can be entered to win Kristie's Share the <3 Giveaway! Simply email your receipt(s) dated 10/1/2013 through 10/31/2013 to publisher (at) angdora (dot) com. There are other ways to enter, as well, in the Rafflecopter below.

Teaser Tuesday, The Corma Incident by Heath Owen

Heath Owen lives with his wife and 2 children in Austin, Texas. Of course he's a tech head, for those who were wondering. He plays with radio controlled off road racing vehicles, has a Ham Radio Operator's license, and drives a car that used to be his hobby; a highly modified DeLorean. He enjoys playing music, drinking coffee, and most importantly, telling made up stories.

The Mission Anatolia Series is Heath's first book series. Most of the characters in this series were created when he was around 12 years old, and have evolved a bit over the years. The original story setting was a space city, and the story line the drama of the character's lives there. It was completely scrapped when the movie "Dark City" came out, but the characters were retained to take part in another story he was toying with. Recently he decided to put it on paper (so to speak. He is actually using a laptop). Book 2 is at the editor. He is currently working on Book 1 of his new Series "Orbital City Falls".

-"I want my readers to be transported from the craziness that life has to offer, into a place where they feel like participants of an adventure."-Heath Owen

Today I have a dear friend of mine, Heath Owen who is here to share about his new novel, The Corma Incident.

Hey Heath! So, tell us a bit about yourself?

Well, I think I'm just about like any other average person, but my wife does not agree. I like to read. I like watching action, adventure, and scifi movies. I've always been into cars. In fact, I was into them so much for a while that I got my wife into them too. I really like listening to music, mostly electronic and rock, but I'll listen to just about anything if it's good. I also play music; just about any instrument.

When did you start writing and why?

That's a tough one to answer. My first story was about a warm fuzzy, and I wrote it in third grade. I don't think that really counts though because that was an assignment. However, at that point I decided to start making up stories that I was interested in. At about twelve years old, I started getting serious about it. I did that by drawing elaborate pictures of a giant city in space. I attached four sheets of writing paper together and got busy on the main city itself. Then I took several sheets separately, and started drawing the various robots, modes of transportation, etc. I got through about a half ream before I started the actual writing part. I created characters, one by one, describing the things they like to do, their physical appearance, and anything else I could think of about them. Life events happened about that time that prevented me from going much further, and I ended up losing all my work. The story and characters stayed with me, but the work itself was on hold for many years. Then the story "Dark City" was released as a movie, and I got discouraged. It wasn't my story, but it was similar enough to appear like plagiarism, so I never wrote the story. However, I continued to develop my character traits in my head based on my experiences, another story formed. Years later, in 2012, I decided to start putting things on paper, and the Mission Anatolia series was born.

You're not the first writer to tell me their idea magically appeared on the screen just when they were about or in the process of developing the same story. Well I'm glad things turned around. Describe your book in 10 words or less:

Intense action, fresh story line with some romance.

Oooh, sounds intriguing. What did you enjoy about the process?

Again, that's a tough one. I enjoyed the whole damn thing. After daydreaming (that's what I call it when I'm contemplating the next move in the outline) I especially enjoyed putting the action scenes on paper. I would dive into the characters minds, and live those moments while my fingers poured into the pages. When I was finished with an action scene, I would have to go back and perform major surgery to cut back on the word count. I could go into extreme detail, and explanations about what the characters were going through, to the point of boring a reader. As I would go back and edit, I could image the poor reader saying something like "Enough already! I get it. She kicked his ass! Move on!"
Haha! I'm with you there. What was the hardest part?

Wow. That would be keeping the technology easy to understand. I get way too wordy on explaining technology, mostly because of my background in engineering.

That's good for those who aren't so techy like us. (wink) Where did your ideas come from?

Simply put, my ideas come from my experiences. For instance, I'm working on a story of a girl who finds out that she has extraordinary abilities. The idea came from a video game that I was playing. A young girl was narrating about a man that saved her life, and then my imagination went to work. I made up a story once from the phrase "Made fresh daily." Unfortunately the story was lost due to some unfortunate circumstances. It was so good though, that I may attempt to rewrite it again.

If the muse hits, write! Sometimes I can't keep my characters quiet! Thanks for the interview.

Good news. Heath has offered a signed copy for me to give away!

Teaser Tuesday -- Initiate by Tara Maya

Today, I have Tara Maya, author of Initiate (book 1) of The Unfinished Song Series, which is currently FREE (.99 on B&N).

Tara Maya has lived in Africa, Europe and Asia. She's pounded sorghum with mortar and pestle in a little clay village where the jungle meets the desert, meditated in a Buddhist monastery in the Himalayas and sailed the Volga river to a secret city that was once the heart of the Soviet space program. This first-hand experience, as well as research into the strange and piquant histories of lost civilizations, inspires her writing. Her terrible housekeeping, however, is entirely the fault of pixies.

SYNOPSIS:

DEADLY INITIATION

A DETERMINED GIRL...
Dindi can't do anything right, maybe because she spends more time dancing with pixies than doing her chores. Her clan hopes to marry her off and settle her down, but she dreams of becoming a Tavaedi, one of the powerful warrior-dancers whose secret magics are revealed only to those who pass a mysterious Test during the Initiation ceremony. The problem? No-one in Dindi's clan has ever passed the Test. Her grandmother died trying. But Dindi has a plan.

AN EXILED WARRIOR...

Kavio is the most powerful warrior-dancer in Faearth, but when he is exiled from the tribehold for a crime he didn't commit, he decides to shed his old life. If roving cannibals and hexers don't kill him first, this is his chance to escape the shadow of his father's wars and his mother's curse. But when he rescues a young Initiate girl, he finds himself drawn into as deadly a plot as any he left behind. He must decide whether to walk away or fight for her... assuming she would even accept the help of an exile.

EXCERPT:

Blue-skinned rusalki grappled Dindi under the churning surface of the river. She could feel their claws dig into her arms. Their riverweed-like hair entangled her legs when she tried to kick back to the surface. She only managed to gulp a few breaths of air before they pulled her under again.

She hadn't appreciated how fast and deep the river was. On her second gasp for air, she saw that the current was already dragging her out of sight of the screaming girls on the bank. A whirlpool of froth and fae roiled between two large rocks in the middle of the river. The rusalka and her sisters tugged Dindi toward it. Other water fae joined the rusalki. Long snouted pookas, turtle-like kappas and hairy-armed gwyllions all swam around her, leading her to the whirlpool, where even more fae swirled in the whitewater.

"Join our circle, Dindi!" the fae voices gurgled under the water. "Dance with us forever!"

"No!" She kicked and swam and stole another gasp for air before they snagged her again. There were so many of them now, all pulling her down, all singing to the tune of the rushing river. She tried to shout, "Dispel!" but swallowed water instead. Her head hit a rock, disorienting her. She sank, this time sure she wouldn't be coming up again.

"Dispel!" It was a man's voice.

Strong arms encircled her and lifted her until her arms and head broke the surface. Her rescuer swam with her toward the shore. He overpowered the current, he shrugged aside the hands of the water faeries stroking his hair and arms. When he reached the shallows, he scooped Dindi into his arms and carried her the rest of the way to the grassy bank. He set her down gently.

She coughed out some water while he supported her back.

"Better?" he asked.

She nodded. He was young--only a few years older than she. The aura of confidence and competence he radiated made him seem older. Without knowing quite why, she was certain he was a Tavaedi.

"Good." He had a gorgeous smile. A wisp of his dark bangs dangled over one eye. He brushed his dripping hair back over his head.

Dindi's hand touched skin--he was not wearing any shirt. Both of them were sopping wet. On him, that meant trickles of water coursed over a bedrock of muscle. As for her, the thin white wrap clung transparently to her body like a wet leaf. She blushed.

"It might have been easier to swim if you had let go of that," he teased. He touched her hand, which was closed around something. "What were you holding onto so tightly that it mattered more than drowning?"

Omgee... I'm hooked. Are you? Well, what are you waiting for? Pick up your free copy today.

Wrath (Soul Savers 5) by Kristie Cook
Release Tour / Book Blast
Genre: Paranormal Romance / New Adult

I'm excited to be part of the Wrath Book tour. Not only did I get to beta read for Kristie, but I designed the cover. It's always an amazing process from start to finish, with rough mock-ups that are very rough that somehow (which Kristie's insight) they polish to a diamond. I have to say, this one was my favorites. Isn't the castle awesome

If you haven't read the Soul Savers Series yet, you're missing out. It's filled with action, adventure, hunky guys, betrayal, love, loss, twists and turns... and wrath. Give it a chance. It's awesome!

Release Date: 8/16/2013

New Adult Paranormal Romance by bestselling author Kristie Cook**Mature Content**Recommended for ages 16+ due to sexual situations and language.

Will a mother’s wrath make her cross the line?

didn't want to cry. For once in my life, tears evaded me. Perhaps because I refused to grieve this loss, because it wasn't a loss in my eyes, in my heart. It was a call for war, yes. But not a loss. I wouldn't allow it.

Besides, I was too mad to cry, even in my exhaustion, and anger would get me much further.

As I curled my body around Sasha’s, though, I realized the anger within me had changed. I no longer felt irrational and blinding fury that dulled all other emotions. But that was okay. I really didn't want to be Psycho Alexis. This, what I now felt in every cell of my body down to the core, was better. My anger had condensed and solidified into a cold, hard stone settling within me. Something I could control and hold onto for the long term to keep me going and focused on the goal.

Wrath.

That’s what I felt. And there was nothing worse than the wrath of a pissed-off mother.

Wrath, the fifth volume in the bestselling, award-winning Soul Savers Series, will have you on the edge-of-your-seat-ravenously-devouring-junk-food as you experience the mysteries, magic, betrayals, and passion that you've come to expect from Kristie Cook’s writing.

And without further ado, here's an excerpt of Glitch,
my new post-zombie apocalypse dystopian coming soon:

The soft cheers of fans in the bleachers floated around me, as my feet remained planted in right field. My brain had different objectives. Actually, my eyes were fixed to my life watch latched onto my wrist, resting just above my softball glove. Green glowing letters read sixty-five years, three months, 5 days, 8 hours, 10 minutes and 13, 12, 11 seconds: the time I had until I died. With a slow breath, I tried not to think too deeply about how long or short that truly was, otherwise the stress might subtract a few days.
Instead, I gained comfort in its steady ticking, second by second. As of this moment, there was promise I’d live a long life and hopefully see wonderful new advances in Brighton, marry for love, and have a few kids. The thought made me smile. Then suddenly, the time suddenly flashed red numerals zipping down to ten minutes.
“Aria, heads up!”
With a squeal, I glanced up just in time and raised my glove to catch a pop fly mid-air, stopping the ball from pummeling into my skull.
Holy!
Above my head, like magic, my wrist glowed sixty-five years again, minus a few months. With a deep exhale and a pounding pulse, I chucked the ball toward Mara, who jumped up and down like she had to pee.
She tagged the runner out at second and the team cheered, praising our double play. But all I could do was blink. I’d almost died. Right there. In right field. Died.
Out of the corner of my eye, Elle, my best friend, gave me the look—the one that says, “what the heck?” I shrugged and smiled, then returned to my dented footprints in the grass and tried to shake off the dread pulsing in my veins.

I film silly things. Yes. We did the Harlem Shake. After the Internet revolution,  I might add. But it's not my fault. I live in a writing hole. We hadn't heard of the Harlem Shake... in a long time. I sound like the old turtle on The Never Ending Story. That's because we (me, myself and my characters) were writing the end of Everlost five gazillion times. Remember? #headdesk Okay, so that's an over exaggeration. It wasn't five gazillion, but it was a lot though. And if I would have know about this amazing dance, I might not have pulled out that last strand of hair keeping my head warm.

So... this also give you a glimpse of my living room and the crazy kids that occupy it often. Keeping them busy also takes up writing time. Summer... are you over yet? They're in need of school and a schedule. Oh... and homework. Bleck.

Anyway... I have been busy! I'm 1/2 way done with my unnamed post zombie apocalypse story. It's coming soon. I promise... *smiles*

What do you think? Can you pick out my kids? How about that tall handsome minecraft dude? Isn't he hot?

I digress.... back to writing.

The truths I discovered at RT

Sunday, I returned from RT book lovers convention in Kansas City. Ever have that feeling you don't know where to start? My brain is zinging with three different stories... new zombie book, sequel to the Talisman Series, and Mer Tales (which could classify as a New Adult considering Ash and Tatchi will be going to college *grins*). Then there's promoting and blogging and tweeting and and and.... wait! Why is it dark? My hats have fallen and they won't get off my eyes!

Let me just start by saying I had a fab time reuniting with my BAFF, Kristie Cook and her publisher, Chrissi Jackson (yeah, I was calling them each others names the entire weekend). They kept me sane, fed and internet supplied the entire trip. Between leaving my ID at home when about to board my flight, to E.L. James (who'd snuck into the convention) jumping up and yelling for the New Adult panel to "stop talking about my book and saying it's self published," two rows behind me, to the crazy outfits people wear to the parties, and inappropriate erotica swag, my mind is still spinning.

Highlights would be meeting Abbi Glines, Tammara Webber, Jamie McGuire, Nicole Williams, and Jennifer Armentrout, who are all so humble and welcoming. And then I found myself puzzled, recognizing faces but not the books they wrote, wishing people would just clothe themselves in a wrapper of their covers while walking around the convention! I know, how rude of me. I absolutely adored meeting the creator of Buffy, Nancy Holder, and Kami Garcia couldn't have been sweeter. She actually asked me about my books *swoon*. And then to have a fan drive three hours to come visit me. *hugs, Melanie!* That made my entire trip!

A few things surprised me. I went with the hopes of gleaning some secret from the Indies who have scored a larger publisher. But after listening to the downsides (loss of control, inability to check sales numbers at a whim, changing pricing points, etc), I was even more confused what would be right for me. And then to top it off, during a panel of successful authors, they were asked, "do you feel successful." Many of them said no. NO? What? *blinks* Did you, successful author, just say no? I really wanted to know why, but then again, maybe they are like me: reach a bar, then move it. It was humbling, enlightening, and grounding all at the same time. So, again, I was stumped. Then that tiny voice reminded me I thought selling 500 copies my first year on my own was HUGE and when I queried an agent with those numbers, she came back with wanting over 10K in book sales. 10K??? At the time, I thought "Holy cow, why would I need an agent if I can do that on my own?" Those numbers were impossible, until I hit that mark and shot so far past it, I still laugh at how many books I've sold. But I keep moving the bar.

So I don't know what's in store for me, but what I have decided is to write what I want to read (even if that means I always fly under the radar), love my readership and dream big, because all those things I have control over. And, I can look in the mirror and honestly can say that I am successful. :)

Oh... and for that, I'm celebrating with a sale, because I do have control over my price points! :) If you haven't dove into the fab world of Natatoria in Everblue, get it for free for a limited time and enjoy Evergreen at $1.99.

Hugs, Brenda

The Space Between tour stop and $200 gift card giveaway!

I'm so excited to have Kristie Cook, best selling author of the Soul Savers Series here to introduce to you her latest release, The Space Between

When did you come up with the idea for The Space Between?
It started with a dream my husband had in October 2011. I remember this specifically because we were on a road trip and I can still see the hotel room clearly when he said, “I had the coolest dream!” He could only remember parts of it and didn’t understand exactly what was going on, but I took notes because it sounded so awesome. Then the characters came to me and it blossomed from there.

What are some interesting things you discovered during your research for the novel?
I learned a lot about living as a deaf person after growing up being able to hear, the difference between ASL and Signed English and other tidbits about the deaf community. I also learned about the concept of Twin Flames, some lesser known Greek mythology and the train routes through Italy. lol

Are you a panster or a plotter?
I used to be mostly a pantser, although even with my first book, I had key scenes in mind, including the climactic scenes. So I had an idea of where the story was going. Now I am more of a plotter. I do a lot of planning of the high and low points, plot twists, etc., ahead of time, but when I actually begin writing, I still let the story unfold naturally. Sometimes it veers off from my outline, but that’s okay. That’s what keeps it fresh and exciting.

How many books are projected for the series?
The Book of Phoenix is slated to be a trilogy. For now anyway. *wink*

Team Jeric or Team Tristan? (or is that fair... lol)
Aack! How am I supposed to answer that?! In a fight, Tristan, no doubt. He has a couple of centuries of experience over Jeric, for one. Plus some other advantages. But in my heart? I think Tristan will always hold a special place as the first book boyfriend I created, but I do love Jeric, too. And Micah. *grin*

What's next?
I’m working on Soul Savers 5, which is slated for release on June 5th.

Thanks for hanging out with me today! Can't wait to see you in person May 1st, at Romantic Times Convention in Kansas City May 1-5th. If you didn't know, we'll be hosting a meeting and greet in our room during the convention. If you'd like to connect, please leave a comment below!

After a month-long dance tour through Italy, 20-year-old Leni Drago returns to Georgia to care for her great-uncle, only to find him gone, the home they shared empty and any evidence he ever existed wiped out. All that’s left is a journal she can’t open.

Jeric Winters has been searching for a piece of his past for over a year, only to reach a dead-end in Georgia. When an urgent and magnetic pull draws him out of his hotel room, he comes face-to-face with the beautiful dancer who’s been haunting his dreams day and night.

Jeric’s one to stay away from—a bad-boy, hit-it-and-quit-it type—but Leni can’t escape the fervent feelings between them. As their own existences begin to crumble around them and shadowy forms that are more monsters than men attack, they realize there’s more to the connection between them than physical fascination.

To solve the riddle their lives have become, they must embark on a journey that requires them to face their pasts and release their true souls. And they must do it fast—dark ones from another world are closing in, intent on killing them. Permanently.
